“GROSS IS BODY”

By: Kaylyn Sverker

For my final project in studio photography, I created a series of self-portraits that dive into the complex nature of the human body. By capturing extreme close-ups of various body parts, such as the face, hands, stomach, legs, and eyes. Challenging perceptions of beauty standards and “body grossness”

Within this series, I am solely focusing on my own scars, scratches, birthmarks, wrinkles, folds, textured skin, and any other imperfections I personally dwell on. By abstracting the figure, I strive to create discomfort within the viewer.

I am experimenting with various light techniques and reflections, playing with harsh direct lighting as well as soft light. I intend to create contrasting moods and textures, allowing the shadows and highlights to exaggerate the human form. Prompting viewers to reflect on their own relationship with their bodies.
